In 2007, The Lancashire Sinfonietta launched a new project with Lancashire Filmmakers - "Lanx-Trax".

The idea was to offer filmmakers the orchestra's recordings as soundtracks for original films inspired by our music. We worked with 2 groups - amateur adult filmmakers from Preston Movie Makers, and students in Film & TV Production at Lancaster & Morecambe College.

"Lanx-Trax" brought filmmakers together with a professional composer to look at the use of music in a variety of genres of film and visual work, revealing the deeper rationale behind musical soundtracks and how to explore their potential.

Film and Music expert, composer and Sinfonietta horn player, Timothy Jackson, presented lectures on the use of music in film and encouraged the filmmakers to discover a new approach where the music became a starting point - inspiring the storyboards, structure and emotion of their new films. This reverse approach produced some very interesting and sometimes surprising results.

The orchestra then offered their entire library of recordings for use by the filmmakers and the composer worked with them as they devised and produced their films.

Films ranged from a vivacious computer generated animation (Pavel Szylobryt - "Particle Explosion") to a gangster movie (Lancaster & Morecambe College - "Path of Choice").

The films were given their first public screening at the Charter Theatre to a sellout audience including 800 Lancashire school children and several of the films have received further screenings, notably Phil Rimmer's "Dance" which won "Best Use of Humour" at the Burnley Film Festival.

Further Projects are planned - to get involved, email us.
